Posted by Stepping on the land of Borneo, opted a spot that`s far away from big city, hours of driving until sailing through most of 900-kilometre`s Mahakam river; was a short story of how DTP`s team made a journey to Mahakam Ulu – East Kalimantan, a regency formed as an extention of Kutai Barat area. And to a surprise, people there have understood technology.
Compared to big cities, life in this 2,5-year regency felt warmer and more modest. There were only a few blocks with bearable infrastructure, and the rest were mostly hilly, rocky and roads full of greasy soil. Distance from one village to another was quite far, in which the road that connected them was still on progress of construction. Thus, many people preferred speedboat and wooden boat as main transportation to go to other villages. The speedboat charge from Tering port to Mahakam Ulu (5-hour trip) was shocking prohibitive as of IDR 450,000 per ride for a single person; which in Jakarta the amount is sufficient to enjoy a hotel buffet or to buy a pack of BB cushion at certain Korean`s make-up brand stores.
Around 30.000 inhabitants, who mostly live in Kalimantan style stage house, still savour electricity under limitation. On most days that were witnessed, electricity was only available at 06.00 P.M to 06.00 A.M. This made the area felt more fulfilled in the evening, because that was the time when people got out from their houses and gathered in simple eating out stall while turning on the television.
However, despite any limitations, obviously the people there had understood technology. They knew email, download, upload and were aware of a number of applications. It was just a matter of no internet network available, so they couldn`t connect with outside world smoothly. That was why DTP`s team had a visit to that 18.000-square metre regency.
In the visit to meet the regency`s local government and Mahakam Ulu society, DTP`s team had a chance to introduce VSAT as a method for rural area to obtain quality internet network. Education about what would be needed to have VSAT network was also delivered well.
From the regency`s local government point of view, Mahakam Ulu is basically very rich with nature and tourism potential. But without internet, it will be hard to promote it to outside world in maximum way. Moreover they would need internet for education and health, in which it`s needed for information search tool.
This visit from DTP`s team had opened up our eyes that internet has become an important need even in the rural areas and VSAT is the solution. Mahakam Ulu is only one of the real examples.

VSAT untuk Mahakam Ulu
Menginjak tanah Borneo yang jauh dari kota besar, belasan jam jalan darat hingga mengarungi sebagian besar sungai Mahakam yang panjangnya lebih dari 900 km. Itulah gambaran singkat tentang perjalanan tim DTP ke Mahakam Ulu – Kalimantan Timur beberapa waktu lalu. Sebuah wilayah kabupaten hasil pemekaran dari Kutai Barat yang ternyata penduduknya sudah melek teknologi.
Jika dibandingkan dengan kota besar, kehidupan di kabupaten yang baru berusia sekitar 2,5 tahun ini terasa lebih hangat dan sederhana. Hanya beberapa blok jalan yang kondisi infrastrukturnya sudah baik, sedangkan sisanya masih jalan perbukitan berbatu dan bertanah liat. Dari satu desa ke desa lain jaraknya cukup jauh, dimana jalan penghubungnya masih dibangun secara perlahan. Oleh karena itu, banyak warga yang lebih memilih speedboat dan kapal kayu sebagai alat transportasi utama untuk pergi ke desa lain.
Sekitar 30.000 jiwa penduduk yang kebanyakan hidup di rumah panggung khas Kalimantan ini masih menikmati listrik dalam keterbatasan. Di kebanyakan hari, listrik hanya ada dari jam 18.00 s/d 06.00.
Namun, di luar dari berbagai kondisi maupun keterbatasan, ternyata masyarakat setempat sudah melek teknologi. Mereka paham email, download, upload dan tahu berbagai aplikasi. Hanya saja tidak adanya koneksi internet yang membuat hubungan mereka dengan dunia luar terhambat. Oleh karena itu, tim DTP melakukan kunjungan ke kabupaten yang memiliki luas sekitar 18.000 km2 tersebut.
Dalam kunjungannya bertemu dengan pemerintah kabupaten dan berbagai lapisan masyarakat Mahakam Ulu, tim DTP berkesempatan untuk mengenalkan VSAT sebagai cara untuk wilayah pedalaman mendapatkan jaringan internet berkualitas. Edukasi mengenai apa saja yang perlu dipersiapkan untuk memiliki jaringan VSAT juga disampaikan dengan baik.
Menurut pihak pemerintah kabupaten, wilayah Mahakam Ulu sebetulnya sangat kaya dengan potensi alam dan pariwisata. Namun tanpa internet akan sulit untuk memaksimalkan promosinya ke dunia luar. Ditambah dengan kebutuhan untuk pendidikan dan kesehatan, dimana internet sangat dibutuhkan untuk bahan belajar serta mencari informasi.
Kunjungan tim DTP ini telah membuka mata bahwa teknologi seperti internet telah menjadi kebutuhan hingga ke wilayah terpencil sekalipun dan VSAT adalah solusinya. Mahakam Ulu hanya satu contoh nyata.
